It’s International Women’s Day!
A Brief History of IWD
It all started in 1908 when 15,000 women marched in New York City. They were demanding shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights. In 1909, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Woman’s Day, held on the last Sunday of February. This was celebrated until 1913. Clara Zetkin, who was the head of the Women’s Office at the Socialist Democratic Party in Germany, suggested that an International Women’s Day should be celebrated. On March 19, 1911, the first International Women’s Day was held. There were many rallies to support women’s rights. It was later decided to have IWD on March 8.
